Discussion: This day was a classic cold core setup in eastern North Dakota and meanwhile heavy snow on the backside of the system across western North Dakota. I teamed up with chase partner “Nathen Erickson” of Twisted Sky Studios that day with an early setup in mind. We waited for initiation at the truck stop along I-29 near Summit, South Dakota but we had to react quickly given storm motions of 60+ MPH. It became clear at 12:45 PM that the system was not going to be as ripe for tornadoes due to the atmosphere not able to recover fast enough. We followed a supercell that developed along the Interstate 29 corridor near the border and moved north which came in our favor given the highway speed was 70 MPH on the interstate. The supercell thunderstorm tried to squeeze out a tornado near Colfax, North Dakota but dynamics weren’t quiet there for this day.
